Basic Synopsis:

“Earth that was could no longer sustain our numbers, we were so many. We found a new solar system, dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. Each one terraformed, a process taking decades, to support human life, to be new Earths. The Central Planets formed the Alliance. Ruled by an interplanetary parliament, the Alliance was a beacon of civilization. The savage outer planets were not so enlightened and refused Alliance control. The war was devastating, but the Alliance's victory over the Independents ensured a safer universe. And now everyone can enjoy the comfort and enlightenment of true civilization.”

However the world is simply not that easy. The outer-rim planets still resist Alliance control. Often colonists immigrate out from the Core to start a new life, sometimes by choice, sometimes transported by the government. These settlers are shuttled to newly terraformed planets and left behind with only their hands, maybe a blanket and a few tools with which to carve out their own piece of a new kind of earth. As long as they don’t cause problems the Alliance will leave them to their fate out there. Only intervening when serious situations draw their attention, for the most part that tends to be the Alliance: Unite everyone under one rule so everyone can be interfered with or ignored equally. Aside from that, there tends to be little for law on the edges, what few that are happened upon is often local militias, or security contracted by the government or corporate organizations.

While the influence of the Alliance spreads everywhere throughout space, in the Core Worlds it is the unquestionable force of power. An authoritative government and law-enforcement organization managed by a Parliament, it maintains control over all that it can. Keeping tags on all living in their domain, and meddling in any matter that spikes their interest in the slightest. Those under its employ often make a comfortable, if not wealthy, life for themselves While lacking the ‘freedom’ that is found on the Rim, the lifestyles and society is often believed to be more than worth the exchange for those who life there. Many opportunities are present for those that live in the Core, which is overflowing with unbelievable resources in manpower, intelligence, military might, and technological innovation. These benefits are only granted to those that are so privileged to be lucky enough to have a home in the Core. It can be compared to a gated community of the modern-day.

In contrast to the Alliance was the once present Independent Faction, a confederacy of planets and moons that formed in a disjunct organization that was opposed to the all encompassing control the Alliance had aimed to place over the galaxy. They instead preferred to manage their matters themselves. However with each outer planet having it’s own form of government, it was little capable of fighting a war against the highly organized and powerful Alliance. What they lacked in training and equipment the Independent’s made up for in spirit, however this was not enough and the Independents  lost the war. Former soldiers from this army are often still proud of their service despite the loss they experienced, at the same time being looked down upon by ‘civilized’ society.

There are many dangers out in space, ranging from various kinds of criminals, even the climates of some planets, and of course the Reavers They started showing up like the boogey-men of space about halfway through the war, out on the Rim. Since then they've been slowly pushed out further into space. Feared, these monstrosities that once held a semblance of humanity attack anything that suits them, with no regard to personal hazard. Those that do come out alive can barely even be considered survivors for the horrors they've witnessed. Stories, on the Core usually rumored to be nothing more than tales to frighten children speak of hideous acts: raping people to death, cannibalism, and about every barbaric act the mind can come up with, plus a few more. Make no mistake those of you who were raised to believe such, they very much do exist.
